On a recent trip to Baltimore, I visited the famous Lexington Market where the small, but colorful and lively flower shop, Lexington Florist, resides. I saw these very healthy specimens of the Lucky Bamboo plants and they graciously allowed me to snap these photos for you.
The Lucky Bamboo has become very popular in recent years and is considered by some to be a bearer of good luck to your home. I don't promote superstition but I do think that anyone who appreciates plant life in their home is fortunate.
These easy-to-grow plants would be quite a fortunate choice for someone who is not sure if they can keep plants alive. They grow slowly and are usually sold as a hydroponic plant, which means they grow in water. I did plant one is soil once and it did well that way, too.
Care Instructions---
- Bright indirect light or some direct sun. Full afternoon sun is too much.
- Keep water in its container at all times. The water should be completely changed every week or so, or the water will start to stink. If it stays that way too long, the plant may rot.
- If it is potted in soil, water a plant in a 6" (15cm) diameter pot thoroughly with about 1 pint of water when the top of the soil is good and dry.
- Fertilize regularly for best color. For plants growing in water: pouring just a little water, that has been mixed with fertilizer for other houseplants, into its container works very well.
