How to Cultivate a Green Thumb

I was at a party yesterday and, as so often happens at these type of functions, the subject of indoor gardening comes up. It came to my attention, once again, that some people still think that they can not grow houseplants. They just don't believe they have a green thumb. I am certain that you can develop that skill; if you use some patience and have the right instructions!! I strive to be as specific as possible in writing out instructions. I do encourage you to try growing one if you truly have that desire.

There are so many indoor plants available today that there is bound to be one that you can try and learn to grow successfully. Here are some hints on picking out one that will grow with you:

• There are many easy-to-grow plants.  It would be best to ask a knowledgeable salesperson at your nursery or garden center to point those out. Some examples of easy-to-grow plants are: 

1. Dracaenas
2. Philodendron plants 
3. Spider plants
4. Rubber plants
5. Cacti and Succulent plants (if you have a sunny window).

• The correct amount of light required and the correct amount of watering are crucial to a plant's survival, so do ask about that.  Each plant has it's own special requirements.  Many plants come with a care tag.  Sometimes the instructions are vague; please ask for more details when purchasing one. 
• Large plants usually require less attention because they do not need water as often as smaller ones.  Sometimes a larger plant may be the best one to begin with.
• They are living things and the desire to learn about them and appreciate them should help you to develop the habit of caring for them on a regular basis.
• There are very specific instructions on this blog for each plant with the intention of giving you all the information you will need for success.  Please feel free to post any questions about any indoor plant that you many have on any page.
• Lastly, you can cultivate a green thumb if you really want to!
