How to care for the Red Chinese Evergreen

This colorful beauty, the Red Chinese Evergreen, greeted me as I walked into the florist where I used to work. There was a time, not too long ago, when a colorful aglaonema was simply unheard of in the horticulture world.

Botanically known as Aglaonemas, the Chinese evergreens have been a staple on the houseplant scene probably since people have been buying plants for their homes. They are very hardy and easy- to-grow. They are tolerant, slow growers and will live with you for years.

These natives of the tropical South Pacific and Thailand are great for someone who is just beginning to develop an appreciation for living with and growing indoor plants.

Care Instructions:
  • Bright indirect light or some direct sun.  Full afternoon sun will be too strong.  Will tolerate lower light for awhile.  How much color is showing in the new growth will indicate if it is receiving enough light for it.
  • Water when dry about 1/4" below the soil surface for a plant in a 6" diameter pot with about 1 pint of water.  A plant in an 8" diameter container should dry out about 1/2" below the soil surface and be watered with up to a quart of water.  A plant in a 10" diameter container should dry out about 1" below the soil surface and will use about 2 qts.of water when necessary.
  • Dust occasionally.  May need to rinse off the leaves with water in the shower or outdoors every once in awhile.
  • Fertilize regularly.
