There is nothing like a beautiful Boston fern to soften the look of a bedroom and help set your mind at rest before you sleep. Their flowing rich green fronds are like a gently flowing cascade of quietness.
This one was recently brought into the house after spending a summer vacation outdoors. That can be a big help in keeping them healthy since the outdoors is their natural environment. They do adapt well indoors but need more tending to than some other houseplants so that should be kept in mind if you choose to own one. They need some grooming as old frond go and shed on the floor.
Botanically known as Nephrolepis exaltata bostoniensis was found in Boston in 1894 and has become a houseplant favorite. It prefers some humidity and does not like drafts although an open window letting in some fresh air is welcome. The Boston fern will help keep the air in your home fresh, too.
Care Instructions--
- Bright indirect light or some morning sun is perfect. Sitting in a north-facing window is ideal.
- Ferns must stay on the moist side so give them some water as soon as the top is dry. A plant in a 6" (15cm) pot should take about 1 pint (almost 1/2 liter) of water when necessary.
- A plant in a 10" diameter pot (about 25cm) should take about one quart or about a liter of water when necessary, for a thorough soak.
- Providing humidity for them can be very helpful. A daily misting is recommended, although the Nephrolepis usually adapts well to normal home humidity.
- Ferns prefer cooler temperatures
- Fertilize regularly
