The Calamondin Orange and Citrus Plants for the Indoors

The Calamondin Orange tree is a charming small tree. It is a welcome sight to see a fruiting plant during the wintertime. Before it starts fruiting, its bright white flowers produce a heavenly fragrance. You can experience a touch of summer during the winter with this plant! You can purchase one of these or another variety of citrus plant at your garden center, florist or even online.

Its fruit is edible and is sour like a lemon. If you'd like to, you can make a marmalade from its skin and fruit!

This is an evergreen and usually sold as a small bush but it can grow 2-3 feet tall. Its botanical name is Citrus mitis and is originally from China. The Calamondin Orange is a favorite in the Philippines and is widely cultivated there.

Care Instructions for indoor Citrus Plants:
  • At least some direct sun is recommended. They thrive in full sun..
  • The most important aspect to keeping them lush is giving them a very good soaking as soon as the top of the soil dries out or slightly below the surface.
  • Plants in 6" (15cm) diameter container will use about a pint of water and in 8"(20cm) diameter containers should get about 1 quart of water when necessary.
  • A plant in a 10" (25cm) diameter pot will take a 1/2 gallon (about 2 liters) of water when ready.
  • Fertilize  regularly
  • A daily water misting when indoors can be helpful in providing humidity
  • Every once in a while, give them a good shower with the garden hose or in the bathtub to  clean up the leaves.
  • They can be pruned to shape.
  • In the summer, they would love a semi-shady place on the patio.
